Are you interested in your first chronograph watch and are trying to find out exactly what is a chronograph watch? Well then you've come to just the right place. A chronograph watch is simply a stopwatch and a watch combined. Chronograph watches have extra subdials called complications that have been set into the dial. Each subdial can tell you a different increment of time. Some chronograph watches opt to show you a 60-second dial, a 60-minute dial and a 24-hour dial. However, this varies from watch to watch. These subdials are controlled by buttons on the side of the case.

Why Are Chronographs Popular?

Chronographs are so popular in the watch community because of their unique style that sets them apart from classic analogue watches while still preserving that timeless look. The extra timekeeping features make them even more appealing for watch enthusiasts who love to take advantage of extra timekeeping features. Having a stopwatch built onto your wrist is just so convenient and is a great benefit for those who love to keep active.

The iconic appearance and extra timekeeping features is what sets the chronograph apart from the pack and what gives it the edge against traditional watches.

What Is The Purpose Of A Chronograph Watch?

The purpose of a chronograph watch was to combine the watch and the stopwatch to create a better timekeeping tool. So instead of having to take two pieces of equipment, you now only need a chronograph watch strapped around your wrist to access a stopwatch with just the press of the button.

The chronograph we have come to know was first created for keeping track of the duration of horse races and has since evolved into what we know it as today. Chronograph watches these days feature the ability to track time in different ways, so whether you’re tracking minutes, seconds or hours there’s a watch with the perfect function for you.

Not only can you track the time, but you can also measure speed with your chronograph. If you’re up for doing some quick maths, the formula for working out your speed is to measure your distance travelled and divide it by the time taken for you to travel that distance. There you have it, speed measured without any need for special tools.

How To Use A Chronograph Watch

To activate the subdials on a chronograph watch, you will need to press the pushers (buttons) on the side of the case. These will function as start, stop and reset.

Step 1: Get confident with the functions of your watch, and ensure you’ve set the time accurately. Locate the buttons, which are generally on the right side of the watch case.

Step 2: Start the chronograph by pressing the button at the 2 o’clock position. This will start the stopwatch function.

Step 3: Stop the chronograph by pressing the same button located at the 2 o’clock position.

Step 4: Reset the chronograph by pressing the second button which is located at the 4 o’clock position.

Step 5: Check your watch to see the time elapsed during the event you are keeping track of.

If your watch seems to function differently to the steps above, check your watch's manual, which will have a detailed guide on all your watch’s functions.
