Casio Tough Solar Gold Black

Great watch, this is my third one. Unstoppable, functional and very good looking.

This review will be a practical assessment of the design.

I love the ‘no battery replacement’ design. And the solar panel texture makes this watch elegant, and the gold-on-black is the best looking of the range for universal dress codes.

Why three? I use one for work, one for dress. The design of the watch is functionality, and this functionality also means it needs replacing after a period. The case is soft plastic, which would be annoying for some, but is non-scratch to almost every surface. It is not non-marking. The plastic will apply itself like crayon initially before the edges wear down a bit if striking a rough surface like Sheetrock - I find it lasts 12-24 months before the plastic band excess loop breaks (it is also soft plastic) - can snip the over length and smooth cut edge to not need this but I like the excess as it takes side pressure off the band clasp finger. I hit up watch repairers for extra band loops when I pass them - but it would be nice to have extras in the box, or aftermarket purchase ability.

The bezel ring will lose all definition when using as a work watch. But the face even with plastic glass scratched looks good. It is a work watch that doesn’t scratch other surfaces easily so I like it. I am resigned to buying another watch after two or slightly more years, even though it has full functionality, due to the erosion of the case - but that watch case is used daily in rough construction activities, and even when wet in mud or concrete doesn’t miss a beat. The scratches in glass do fill with silt/dust, so as the watch suffers abuse you must completely wash it more often. But the fact that it doesn’t gouge other surfaces is a great design choice so watch replacement is factored in to its use for me.

Don’t pull watch out of box expecting to use it- it will need a days charge in the sun before time-setting the time on watch, and to have the watch work. I use it daily and never misses a beat.

Using another as a dress watch (I always have one for this purpose) I must remember to charge it in sun a full day before going out if I have stored in a dark cupboard and have used it in low light for a significant period which defeats the auto battery preserve circuit. If I leave it on my desk during daylight - no problems. When the work watch case degrades enough, I buy another Casio Today gun Solar as a new dress watch, and downgrade the dress watch to a work watch. The sharp edges of the case can reshape the edge of point of the case to a new prismatic edge if you bump into a hard surface etc, so you do sort of need to take care of watch in a dress-watch use case against accidental knocks for maintaining its impeccable looks, as adding prismatic edges to watch isn’t the ideal due to the soft plastic.

Make no mistake this a poor man’s dress watch, but a very comfortable one. I own expensive watches that never get worn because I like this watch. Also I don’t have to worry about damaging walls, desks, benches, glass, or scratching my expensive metallic watches. Replacement watches are cheap, so I keep a spare. A new band on my expensive watches cost more than 2-3 of these watches.

May not be a watch for the underground miner etc unless sodium lamps, or lots of fluorescent lights, as this is a solar watch. You cannot break this watch. You can break the band - but that also prevents injury - and the soft plastic of the band is very comfortable in daily wear.

Good looking and tough!

This is the first Tough Solar watch I've bought, and I love it. It's my main outdoor/gardening watch that I love wearing when I might knock it, or get a bit dirtier than normal. It's as tough as a G-Shock but easy to read and use. And all the while, I'm charging it up as I spend time in the garden. Perfect combination of good looks and toughness in a watch.
