Maserati Watches History
The Maserati brand was born out of four brothers from Bologna, Italy who were united by their undeniable passion for cars and engines. Opening their first automobile garage known as the Officine Alfieri Maserati in 1914, Alfieri, Ettore, Ernesto and Bindo combined their experience and enthusiasm with their vision for precision-based engines. Producing some of the world’s very first 4, 6, 8 and 16 cylinder engines, Maserati is responsible for kicking off the development of sports cars and the luxury culture that surrounds them. By 1926, the brothers had produced their first original creation, the Tippo 26, a racing vehicle. The car was the first to feature the brand’s now infamous trident logo that is instantly recognisable next to many other popular car brands including Mercedes, Toyota, Ferrari, Audi and BMW.
Following several momentous milestones which included setting the world record for the fastest 16-cylinder V4 engine (a record that stood until 1937), the Maserati brothers sold the Maserati brand to Adolfo Orsi, an entrepreneur from Modena. Moving the brand from its headquarters in Bologna to Modena, Orsi is responsible for turning the struggling company around and helping it become what it is today. Under Orsi’s leadership, Maserati took first place at many major racing championships including the Indianapolis 500, produced one of the first sports cars designed for daily use rather than racing and helped German Formula One driver, Juan Manuel Fangio win his fifth Grand Prix (Masterati’s second).
Thanks to the four Maserati brothers and Orsi’s determination along with their eventual ownership under the Alfa Romeo Group, the brand continues to be a chief innovator not just in the world of sports cars but also in multiple other industries. Joining forces with the Morellato Group, an Italian watchmaker responsible for watch brands including Just Cavalli, Furla and Sector has been producing timepieces under the Maserati name since the mid-2010s. Founded in the 1930s, the Morellato Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of watch straps and other merchandise. With both brands heralding from Bologna, Italy, Maserati and Morellato combine their 180 years of innovation in their respective fields in a global partnership that promotes cutting-edge designs and mechanical precision. With each model evoking the spirit of the automobile world and the brand’s 100-year history, Maserati continues to be at the helm of style and functionality in the 2020s.
