Dr No | Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538

For the inaugural James Bond that introduced us to Scottish actor Sean Connery’s 007 way back in 1962, the British spy sports the Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538. Fitting for a man who admires the finer things in life, this Rolex watch features a classic analogue dial with a daring black face and bezel as well as a tan leather face. A favourite among collectors with a penchant for James Bond watches, this waterproof men’s watch was notable for its enlarged knob and lack of crown guards that were prominently featured on watches to protect its dial and bezel during this era.

From Russia with Love & Goldfinger | Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538

When Connery returned to the role of James Bond in 1963’s From Russia With Love and then again in the 1964 film, Goldfinger, the Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538 also made a comeback. While Bond’s watches in this film are yet to become equipped with any crime-fighting capabilities, this film helps solidify this leather watch as an iconic bit of movie memorabilia that we are still talking about nearly sixty years later. But the Rolex Submariner isn’t the only stylish timepiece that makes an appearance in Goldfinger. In this film, you will also spot a Rolex GMT Master Reference 6542 worn by actress Honor Blackman in her role as one of the film series’ most iconic Bond girls.

Thunderball | Breitling Top Time

When the Scottsman stepped back into James Bond’s shoes for the fourth time in 1965’s Thunderball, he did so with not one but two new timepieces. For this film, Bond sports a Breitling Top Time watch and the Breitling Navitimer Ref. 806. Boasting intricately designed chronograph dials that are emphasised by stylish monochromatic detailing, these two chronograph watches also had a few extra spy functions including a Geiger counter that helps detect iodised radiation. Unbeknownst to the film’s makers, in 2013 one of these watches was purchased at a flea market for just over $45. Upon discovering the origins of the watch, the owner then resold the watch at an auction for an eye-watering $185,000. Talk about a profit!

You Only Live Twice | Gruen Precision 510

An all-new Bond film means an all-new Bond watch. This time it is a timepiece from the American luxury watch company, Gruen. Adorned with a simplistic pearl white dial and antique gold case, Connery’s Bond continues with an affinity for sporty leather watches in You Only Live Twice with this piece’s stylish black, leather mock-croc strap. A timepiece that many suspect that it may have come from Connery’s personal watch collection, the Gruen Watch Company was once one of the most well-known brands on the market until they went out of business in 1977. However, they soon made a comeback in the early 2000s under new ownership.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service | Rolex Chronograph Ref. 6238

1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service ushered in a new era for this iconic film, with Australia’s George Lazenby stepping into the titular role as everyone’s favourite member of the British Secret Service. A new Bond also meant an all-new watch. And while Lazenby’s portrayal as 007 may have garnered a mixed reaction, the same cannot be said about the Rolex Chronograph he wears in the film. This timeless stainless steel watch features a statement chronograph dial with a shiny face and a large crown that Bond places on top of a copying machine during one of the scenes in the film.

Diamonds Are Forever | Gruen Precision 510

After Lazenby’s polarising turn as Bond in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Sean Connery stepped back into the role for the film franchises’ seventh instalment, Diamonds Are Forever. With this film, Connery didn’t just bring his wit and unmistakable charm, he brought his Gruen Precision 510 watch back with him too. While the gold watch doesn’t feature that prominently in this Bond blockbuster as some of his other watches in previous films, it certainly stands out, particularly when Connery is rocking one of his suave tuxedos.

Live and Let Die | Pulsar LED Digital Watch & Rolex Submariner 5513

The 1970s introduced a new era for Bond films and watches. With the space exploration era enforcing trends in everything from entertainment to technology and fashion, Seiko used the opportunity to piggyback on this other-worldly trend with Pulsar watches from their newly launched subsidiary brand. As the first watch brand to introduce the world’s first LED watch, Pulsar helped re-shape the industry and spearheaded a movement in which everyone was sporting digital watches, including James Bond. For his first outing as 007 in 1971’s Live and Let Die, Sir Roger Moore is seen wearing a silver stainless-steel Pulsar LED with a traditional link band. But that’s not the only timepiece Moore sports in the film as he also wears a Rolex Submariner 5513 that MI6’s resident tech-head fits with a small circular saw and a magnet.

The Man with the Golden Gun | Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513

For his sophomore turn as Bond, Moore took a page out of the books of Bonds of the past by wearing the Rolex Submariner he wore in the previous film. Boasting a classic stainless-steel case and band, as well as a daring black dial with bright gold digits and watch hands, the Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 is a real collector's item among watch fans as well as Bond fans who are keen to own a part of movie history. While the timepiece was sans any cool spy-proof gadgets, it still made for a good Bond watch nevertheless.

The Spy Who Loved Me | Seiko 0674 LC

While previous 007 actors relied heavily on Swiss watches like Rolex and Breitling, Sir Roger Moore had a real thing for Japanese craftsmanship during his tenure as Bond, particularly Seiko watches. For The Spy Who Loved Me, 007 rocks the Seiko 0674 LC. Highly reminiscent of the classic Casio watch, this classic digital-style watch boasts a classic rectangular digital display and an elegant stainless steel silver band. Like any great Bond film, however, this Seiko comes with a few added features including an instant messaging feature that prints out tiny notes from fellow MI6 agents.

Moonraker | Seiko M354 Memory Bank Calendar

For the epic space-themed Bond blockbuster Moonraker, Moore switches out his Seiko 0674 LC for the Seiko M354 Memory Bank Calendar. With both a digital dial and a traditional analogue dial, this rectangular timepiece is a real gem among Seiko collectors. Many watch collectors will scour marketplace platforms like eBay, Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace in hopes to find one of these bad boys in mint condition. Fitted with a detonation device by Q, the Memory Bank Calendar even plays a huge role in this 1979 film’s explosive climax.

For Your Eyes Only | Seiko 7549-7009 & Seiko H357 Duo Display

For the iconic 1981 film, For Your Eyes Only, Roger Moore again wears two watches. The first is a classic analogue-style watch, the Seiko 7549-7009 and the second is the Seiko H357 Duo Display watch that features both an analogue and digital dial. With its large gold bezel and crown, Bond sports the Seiko 7549-7009 as a dress watch often when wearing a tuxedo. The Seiko H357 on the other hand is a watch that Bond wears during his more physically enduring moments. Somewhat of a prelude to smart watches, the H357 has functions that deliver text-like messages and allow you to make audio recordings.

Boasting a thick, black resin case and a rectangular dial, this digital chronograph is equipped with a huge range of features including dual time, world time, a stopwatch and an alarm. The watch features prominently throughout the film and is fitted out with some handy spy features that 007 needs to conduct his missions, including a tracking device that helps locate a Fabergé egg that is a major plot point in the film.

For Roger Moore’s final curtain-call as 007 in A View to a Kill, the star goes out with a bang and a handful of great watches. In this 1985 film also starring style chameleon and singer Grace Jones as well as Christopher Walken, the late British actor rocks no less than four watches-including the Seiko 6923-8080 SPD09. Featuring an elegant two-tone style stainless-steel band, this analogue watch is a major departure from Moore’s typical watch style as Bond that often-included digital watches. Also making an appearance in this 80’s Bond classic is the Seiko H558-500 SPW001 diver’s watch and the Rolex Datejust.

The Living Daylights | TAG Heuer Professional Night-Dive Reference 980.031

Beating out several high-profile British actors, including Pierce Brosnan for the role, Timothy Dalton stepped into the role of Bond for the 1987 film, The Living Daylights. To commemorate this whole new era for the long-running film franchise, Bond upgrades his timepiece to the TAG Heuer Professional Night-Dive. Featuring a luminous off-white analogue dial and a 200-metre water resistance level, this black watch is from the TAG Heuer collection that would go on to be replaced by the brand’s Aquaracer line. The edginess of this watch is perhaps symbolic of the tone of this film that was a lot grittier and darker than its predecessors in the franchise which were a lot more humorous.

With its classy silver, stainless steel band and elegant black dial, the Rolex Submariner Ref.16610 that 007 rocks in Licence to Kill is a great nod to the other great James Bond actors that came before him including Connery and Moore who famously wore timepieces from the same line throughout their tenure.

GoldenEye | Omega Seamaster Professional 300M Ref. 2541.80

After a long hiatus, Bond made his long-awaited return in the mid-90s with Goldeneye. Stepping into the lead role this time was hunky Irish actor Pierce Brosnan who was a sound choice thanks to his suave persona and rugged good looks. But Brosnan wasn’t the only one to make his debut in this Bond instalment as this 1995 flick also introduced Omega as the franchise’s official watch partner. For this film, Brosnan wears the Omega Seamaster Professional 300M Ref. 2541.80, a diver’s watch with a classic stainless-steel exterior and elegant blue face. Naturally, as any good spy watch should be, it is fitted out with a few extra additions by the Q Branch including a laser that is fired out through the bezel and a built-in detonator.

Returning to the film franchise two years later in Tomorrow Never Dies, Brosnan again sports a piece from the luxury Swiss watchmaker. This time Bond totes the Omega Seamaster Professional Ref. 2531.80. With its rich-blue bezel and dial that features an intricate wave-like pattern, the ocean’s influence on this timepiece is incredibly apparent-especially when you factor in that the Omega Seamaster is a diver’s watch with a 300-metre water resistance level. An automatic chronometer version of the classic Seamaster, the watch is an ideal choice for Bond where secret underwater dive missions are a natural part of the job. Not to mention, it could also remotely detonate a hand grenade thanks to Q’s handiwork.

Equipped with a detonation device and built-in laser just like Bond’s Omega in Goldeneye, Die Another Day helped solidify this watches status as one of the most memorable timepieces in the film franchise.

Casino Royale | Omega Seamaster Professional 300M Ref. 2220.80.00

The mid-2000s yet again ushered in a whole new era for the James Bond film franchise with actor Daniel Craig stepping into the infamous role. With his sandy-blonde hair, piercing blue eyes and a more serious approach to the character, Craig brought something to the Bond films that we had not seen before. The same cannot be said about his watch, with the Omega Seamaster yet again making an appearance in the film. This time, however, Bond wears the Omega Seamaster Professional Ref. 2220.80.00 along with the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ref. 2900.50.91. While the Omega Seamaster Craig wears in Casino Royale is very similar to the Omega watches that Pierce Brosnan wears throughout the franchise with their signature wave pattern on the dial, the Seamaster Planet Ocean features a sporty black leather band and a matching black dial with silver accents.

Boasting a statement black dial with a diamond-cut pattern on it, this silver watch doesn’t get too much screen time in the film, but it certainly made an impact in the little time it appeared on the silver screen. Specifically made for Craig to wear in his role as Bond, naturally, they were sold to the public as a limited-edition watch to commemorate this film’s release. And with only around 5,007 pieces in circulation around the world, you had to be quick to snap one of these marvellous timepieces up.

While this timepiece bears the same silver and black stainless-steel detailing as Craig’s watches from previous 007 films, this Omega has a stylish brick-pattern embossed on its dial that gives this timepiece a slightly edgier look. That same watch was later sold for around 200,000 euros at a special auction commemorating “50 Years of Bond”, other Bond memorabilia that went under the hammer during this auction included the watch worn by Craig in Quantum of Solace, an assortment of props and costumes from many of the films and even a BMW that is driven by Pierce Brosnan in The World Is Not Enough.
