To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Master of G Frogman model, one of the most classic G-Shock watches, the Japanese watchmaker has released a brand-new amphibious watch with strong ties to the original DW-6300 diver.

We are super excited to get our hands on the G-Shock Poison Dart Frog Frogman – and for good reason. There are a lot of unique features in this limited edition model, and G-Shock's passion is evident in the detail.

The Frogman GWF-A1000APF-1A's inspiration, the poison dart frog found rarely in the Amazon Rainforest, is a great choice. The mysterious amphibian's multicoloured look and vibrant patterns have leapt the Frogman right into our attention, and the stellar aesthetics don’t end there.

Overview:

Case & Strap

G-Shock claims to have used a relatively new process for randomly laminating the carbon and coloured glass fibres in this watch’s bezel. That means that just like the poison dart frog, every one of these models has slightly different.

The contrast of red, blue, and black is a recurring theme in this line, and it really does make a statement. Sections of translucent urethane here add the finishing touches to a captivating first impression.

The resin strap has been printed with speckles of polarised ink that shift colour depending on light or the angle you view it. It gives the timepiece a similar effect to the poison dart frog and adds yet another point of difference for this brand-new G-Shock.

Turn the timepiece around and you’ll see the iconic Frogman character with an Amazonian makeover. Now resembling a poison dart frog, the Frogman is engraved with extra sports and stripes to make this edition that little more special.

Dial

The dial, while eye-catching in its own right, does a great job of complementing the flashy bezel. There's some appealing striped texture in the top right quarter, and the subdials are spread nicely across the face. Given the size of the diving watch, the dual-time is an easily readable feature.

If we're talking about standout features, how about those indices? The orange-red colour makes bright contrast to the black dial, and looks great in a chunky baton style.

Specifications

First off, the watch has some size. Lug-to-lug measures 56.7mm with a width of 51.7mm and a 19.7mm height. It’s a bigger, thicker watch, but it doesn’t feel heavy or uncomfortable.

Let’s move into the specs. I’m sure you’ve noticed that G-Shock has continued with its analogue reimagining of the Frogman line (to clarify: the module itself remains digital). This is a change that some have enjoyed, and others have been unsure about.

Even without the digital screen, this diver has some serious power. It features two dual-time subdials and a day-of-the-week complication to go along with a diving mode and logs.

An ISO 200-meter water resistance and Carbon Core Guard keep this G-Shock well protected, while a radio-controlled movement offers excellent accuracy when you’re within range of stations across Asia, Europe and the US. If you aren’t in range, this timepiece will stay accurate to a respectable plus or minus 15 seconds per month.

Our Thoughts

There’s a lot to love about the G-Shock Poison Dart Frog Frogman, and it’s a worthy limited edition update for a classic Casio diver. This is a watch that makes a statement. It's as visually interesting as any recent G-Shock arrivals, and that's owed to modern technique and design.

While it represents a departure from the original Frogman, G-Shock does pay homage to the Master of G diving watch in this new timepiece. The screws on the bezel, Frogman character, and diving credentials make this watch instantly recognisable as a modern take on a fan favourite.
