Let’s be honest. When the Audemars Piguet X Swatch rumours started flying around, most of us thought we knew what was coming.

A colourful Royal Oak-style Swatch wristwatch. Bioceramic case. Big queues. Loads of online noise. Pretty predictable, really.

But that’s not what we got.

The Audemars Piguet X Swatch Royal Pop is a mechanical, convertible pocket watch. Not a normal wristwatch. Not a cheap Royal Oak. Not the obvious follow-up many people had in mind. It’s weirder than that, and honestly, that’s what makes it interesting.

We haven’t held one in our hands yet. These watches have been so sought after that, for now, we’ve only seen the trending videos, images and early online coverage. So this is more of a quick take on what’s going on, what the watch actually is, and where we think it sits.

So, What Actually Is It?

The Royal Pop is built around a removable Bioceramic holder and calfskin lanyard. You can wear it around your neck, carry it like a pocket watch, clip it to something, or use the small stand to turn it into a desk clock.

That’s the main twist.

This isn’t Swatch doing a straight Royal Oak-style wristwatch. It’s Swatch and AP taking Royal Oak design cues and pushing them into something more playful, more awkward and much less expected.

Some people will hate that. Fair enough.

A lot of buyers wanted the simple version: a Royal Oak-shaped Swatch they could strap on and wear every day. Instead, this feels more like a collectible object. A watch-adjacent conversation piece. It still tells the time, of course, but the format is half the story.

Dial, Case & Design

The Royal Pop clearly borrows from the Royal Oak playbook: octagonal bezel, eight screws, slim markers, bathtub-style hands and a stamped Petite Tapisserie-style dial pattern. That textured dial is doing a lot of the work here. It gives the watch enough AP character without turning it into a straight wristwatch copy.

There are eight versions, from cleaner blue and black options to much louder pink, yellow, teal and lime combinations. That’s where Swatch comes in. AP brings the shape language. Swatch brings the colour and the cheek.

The hands and hour markers use Super-LumiNova Grade A, so they’re designed to glow in low light. Useful, especially when some of the brighter colourways have a lot going on visually.

Case & Wearability

This is where the whole thing gets interesting.

The watch head is 40mm wide and 8.4mm thick. On paper, that sounds like it could work as a wristwatch. That’s why everyone is already asking the obvious question: will someone make a strap or conversion kit?

With the holder attached, it measures 44.2mm x 53.2mm. As a pendant or pocket watch, that makes more sense. As a wristwatch, it’d be a fairly bold object.

No official wrist strap is included, and there’s no confirmed official wristwear option in the information available. But custom strap makers are almost certainly going to have a go. The design feels like it’s practically daring them to try.

Will all of those conversions look good? Probably not. Will some people try anyway? Absolutely.

Movement & Specs

The movement is one of the better parts of the story.

Inside is a hand-wound Sistem51 mechanical movement. That means you wind it manually rather than relying on a battery or automatic rotor. For a pocket watch, that actually makes sense.

The specs are strong for what this is:

  • 90-hour power reserve: It can run for around 90 hours when fully wound.
  • 21,600 vibrations per hour: The operating frequency of the movement.
  • Nivachron hairspring: An anti-magnetic hairspring designed to resist magnetic interference.
  • Laser-set precision: The movement’s rate is set at the factory using laser technology.
  • Precision rating: -5/+15 seconds per day.

There’s also a visible movement through the sapphire caseback, with colourful pop-art-inspired decoration. The openworked barrel gives you a visual cue of how wound the watch is, which is a neat detail.

That’s the part that makes this feel more considered than a pure novelty release.

What About The Strap Question?

This is probably going to be the biggest talking point after the initial shock settles.

Right now, the Royal Pop is a pocket watch and lanyard concept. That’s the official setup. Different Bioceramic holders and lanyards are planned as accessories, but an official wrist strap hasn’t been confirmed.

Still, because the watch head is 40mm, people are going to want to wear it on the wrist. It’s too obvious not to happen.

Our take? Custom straps and wrist conversion kits feel very likely. Whether Swatch ever leans into that officially is another question.

Who’s This Actually For?

The Royal Pop suits someone who likes watches as objects, not just daily wearers.

If you wanted a practical Royal Oak-style Swatch wristwatch, this might feel like a miss. It gets close enough to tease that idea, then swerves away from it.

But if you enjoy Swatch collaborations, colourful design, mechanical movements and slightly odd releases, there’s something here. It’s not safe. It’s not obvious. It’s not trying to be your everyday watch.

That’s probably the point.

Final Verdict

The Audemars Piguet X Swatch Royal Pop isn’t what most people expected.

Would a Bioceramic Royal Oak-style wristwatch have been easier to understand? Definitely. Would it have sold like mad? Almost certainly.

But this is more interesting because it’s less predictable. It takes familiar AP design language and filters it through Swatch’s playful, slightly chaotic personality. The result is a mechanical pocket watch that feels strange, collectible and very online.

We’re not calling it a must-buy until we’ve actually handled one. For now, based on the specs, images and early coverage, it feels like a clever curveball rather than a failure to deliver.

Not what we thought was coming. Still worth watching.

If You Like The Royal Pop, You Might Also Like These

The Royal Pop is odd, colourful and very design-led. It’s not really about being the most practical watch in the room. It’s about wearing something with personality. If that’s the part you like, these G-Shock models hit a similar note in a more everyday-friendly way.

G-Shock Hidden Glow Vol.2 Sea of Stars GA2100HDS-7A

This is probably the closest pick if the Royal Pop’s playful colour and “talking point” energy is what grabbed you. The GA2100HDS-7A has a white and blue colour palette inspired by summer seas, with glow-in-the-dark dial elements designed to evoke bioluminescent plankton. It also keeps the recognisable octagonal GA-2100 case shape, so you still get that sharp, modern silhouette. At $235, it’s a much easier way to get something fun, tough and visually different on the wrist.

G-Shock GMAP2110-7A

If you like the cleaner Royal Pop colourways, the GMAP2110-7A makes sense. It has a white bio-based resin case and strap, a slim silver metallic bezel, a white dial, silver markers and a digital window. It’s compact for a G-Shock at 46 x 40.5 x 11.3mm and weighs 37g, so it keeps the angular look without feeling too heavy. You also get shock resistance, 200-metre water resistance, world time, stopwatch, countdown timer, five daily alarms and double LED Super Illuminator.

G-Shock GMAP2110-4A

This is the softer, warmer option. The GMAP2110-4A pairs a beige/pink-toned bio-based resin case and strap with a slim rose gold metallic bezel, giving it more of a styled, fashion-led feel while still keeping proper G-Shock practicality. Like the white version, it’s 46 x 40.5 x 11.3mm, weighs 37g, has 200-metre water resistance and includes everyday functions like world time, stopwatch, countdown timer, alarms and double LED lighting.

None of these are trying to be the Royal Pop. That’s the point. But if you liked the idea of a bold, design-driven watch and want something you can actually wear every day, these are worth a look.
